What a BMET I does
A BMET I handles the core work of a biomed shop: completing scheduled preventive maintenance, running electrical safety and performance checks, making routine repairs, and recording every service event in the CMMS. You’ll work on high-volume devices such as infusion pumps, patient monitors, beds and suction equipment, with senior technicians available for more complex problems. Some employers also hire for equipment processing and sanitizing roles at this level, which can be a stepping stone into technician work.
Typical qualifications
Employers usually look for an associate degree in biomedical equipment technology, electronics or a related field, or military biomedical equipment training, and many BMET I openings welcome recent graduates. Good troubleshooting habits, attention to detail and clear communication with clinical staff matter as much as technical skill. The AAMI CABT is a good first certification.
Where BMET I leads
With experience you can move into BMET II roles with more independent repair work, then into senior, specialty or imaging paths. Still in school? Look at biomedical internships and externships.
