What does a BMET do?

Biomedical equipment technicians (BMETs) keep the medical devices behind patient care safe, accurate and ready to use. The work mixes scheduled preventive maintenance (PMs), troubleshooting and repair, electrical safety and performance testing, and careful documentation in a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). BMETs support everything from infusion pumps, patient monitors and defibrillators to ventilators, sterilizers and lab analyzers, working in a hospital’s healthcare technology management (HTM) or clinical engineering department or for an independent service organization.

BMET jobs by level

  • BMET I: entry-level roles focused on PMs, safety checks and general biomedical equipment, with senior technicians close by.
  • BMET II: independent troubleshooting and repair across a broader range of devices.
  • BMET III: senior technicians who take on complex and specialty equipment and mentor others.
  • Lead BMET: senior technicians who also coordinate the work of a shop or team.
  • Traveling and contract BMET: assignments across multiple facilities or for a set term.

How to become a BMET

Most BMETs start with an associate degree in biomedical equipment technology or electronics, or with military biomedical equipment training. Certifications from the AAMI Credentials Institute, such as the CABT early in your career and the CBET once you have experience, can help you stand out as you advance. Create your HTM Jobs profile so employers in our Talent Network can find you when the right BMET role opens.
