What do imaging engineers do?
Imaging engineers, often called imaging service engineers or ISEs, install, calibrate, maintain and repair medical imaging equipment. Depending on the role, that can include radiography and fluoroscopy, mammography, CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and interventional systems. Because imaging downtime affects patient schedules directly, imaging engineers also coordinate closely with radiology, work alongside medical physicists on quality and safety testing, and partner with manufacturer support on complex failures.
Imaging engineer jobs by level
- Imaging Engineer I: the entry point to imaging service, often for experienced BMETs, typically focused on radiography and other foundational systems.
- Imaging Engineer II: independent service across several modalities, often including CT.
- Imaging Engineer III: senior engineers on advanced modalities such as CT and MRI who also mentor others.
Getting into imaging service
Many imaging engineers come up through BMET roles, adding manufacturer service training for specific systems. The AAMI CRES (Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist) is the industry’s imaging-specific certification. Create your HTM Jobs profile so imaging employers in our Talent Network can find you.
