What device repair technicians do
Repair technicians diagnose and fix medical devices and their subassemblies, often at the board or component level. Depot and bench roles test, repair and refurbish equipment sent in for service, while specialty field roles, such as laser service engineers, maintain specific device types at customer sites. Accurate testing, documentation and quality procedures are central to the work.
Typical qualifications
Employers typically look for an electronics degree, military electronics training or equivalent experience, plus skill with soldering, schematics and test equipment. Electronics technicians from other industries can often transfer their skills into medical device repair.
