What do HTM leaders do?
HTM leaders run the programs that keep a health system’s medical equipment safe and available. Depending on the level, that includes managing technicians and engineers, building budgets, overseeing service contracts and vendors, planning equipment replacement, tracking performance in the CMMS, and keeping the program compliant with The Joint Commission, CMS and other requirements. Leaders also partner with clinical, supply chain and IT teams on technology decisions.

Building toward leadership
Many HTM leaders start as BMETs or clinical engineers and grow through lead and supervisory roles. A bachelor’s degree is common for manager and director positions, and the AAMI CHTM (Certified Healthcare Technology Manager) credential is designed for HTM leaders.
